Diebold Nixdorf bets on branch revamps to boost ATMs | PaymentsSource

Diebold Nixdorf, a leading provider of ATM technology, has recently revamped its product offerings following its bankruptcy in 2023. The company is now witnessing a positive cash flow for the fourth consecutive quarter, demonstrating a strong market presence for ATMs, especially as banks are in the process of reimagining their branches. Joe Myers, executive vice president of global banking at Diebold Nixdorf, stated that banks are beginning to understand the crucial role branches play in customer acquisition and retention. Consequently, the company has introduced new branch automation tools that merge self-service and digital banking, thereby enhancing the role of ATMs within branches.

Interestingly, Diebold Nixdorf has reported an impressive shipment of over 200,000 cloud- and internet-enabled DM Series ATMs since 2023, doubling the rate of the previous three years. This growth comes at a time when the ATM market continues to thrive despite a decline in cash usage. The global ATM market is currently valued at approximately $26 billion in yearly transaction volume and is expected to reach $31.6 billion by 2030, according to Grandview Research. Yet, the global percentage of cashless payments has risen from 73% in 2028 to 86% in 2025, as reported by Capital One.

Branching out

With the banking industry becoming increasingly digital, ATMs are finding a renewed purpose. Modern ATMs are now being designed to provide financial information, facilitate bill payments, and perform other functions similar to banking apps or websites. As Joe Myers points out, ATMs are complementing digital channels instead of replacing them, offering a user experience that combines multiple channels, including a branch.

Banks like PNC and Truist have recently invested significantly in their branch networks. PNC has committed $2 billion towards its branch network, focusing on areas with high growth potential while reducing its footprint in stagnant markets. Truist plans to open 100 new branches and upgrade 300 existing ones, modernizing its ATMs to replace traditional branch tasks such as cash management or balance inquiries.

These investments challenge the narrative that branches are in decline. Even though there are fewer bank branches than before, many banks replace them with smaller venues equipped with more self-service machines or rearrange branch layouts to emphasize self-service.

Cash machine

Due to the rise of mobile and web banking, Diebold Nixdorf, like other ATM manufacturers, has faced significant challenges in recent years. To adapt to these changes, the company launched Vynamic, a cloud-based retail payment and management service. This service allows merchants to quickly update their point-of-sale systems. More recently, Diebold Nixdorf increased its use of AI to locate and repair newer-model ATMs.

To recover from its bankruptcy, Diebold Nixdorf has simplified its product offerings and combined three of its software platforms. This strategy has significantly contributed to the company’s recovery, with its stock price rising over 40% in the past year. The company reported earnings per share of $1.39 in its most recent earnings report, surpassing Zacks Investment Research estimates of $0.66.

Diebold Nixdorf operates in a competitive market, with rivals such as NCR Atleos and payments fintechs like Stripe and Block. Despite the competition, Diebold Nixdorf’s strong recovery and strategic innovations demonstrate its resilience and potential for future growth.
