Alex Gerko, a former Russian citizen and currently Britain’s biggest single taxpayer, has made a name for himself not only in the financial world but also for his passion for the environment. Alongside his love for nature, Gerko is also known to have a keen interest in mathematics. His company, XTX Markets, founded in 2015, shares this enthusiasm for mathematics and is willing to reward those who excel in it.
The AI Mathematical Olympiad by XTX Markets
In 2023, XTX Markets introduced the AI Mathematical Olympiad (AIMO), a challenge fund aimed at promoting the development of AI models capable of performing complex mathematical tasks. The grand prize of $5 million is reserved for the first AI model to achieve a performance equivalent to a gold medal in the International Mathematical Olympiad.
Aside from the grand prize, there are also $5 million in progress prizes awarded for achieving specific milestones in the development of AI models. Notably, the first progress prize of $1.048 million was awarded in 2024 to “Project Numina,” a project supported by Mistral AI. The second prize of $2.1 million went to a team from Nvidia. The third progress prize, with a prize pot of $2.2 million, was recently launched.
The latest competition promises to be the most challenging yet, with increased problem difficulty and access to industry-leading compute resources. Prizes for the top five performers range from $262,000 to $16,000, with additional smaller prizes up for grabs.
