Electronic Trading Firms in London: A Look at Pay Disparities

Electronic trading firms like Jane Street have been attracting top graduate talent globally, thanks to their lucrative pay packages. When examining the salaries offered by these firms, it becomes evident why they are so sought after.

Salaries at Top Electronic Trading Firms

We analyzed the UK entities of 20 leading electronic trading firms, which are required to disclose employee salaries and headcounts in their annual reports. The data reveals a significant variance in pay scales among these firms.

Table: Average compensation for select London electronic trading firms

One standout in terms of compensation is Quadrature Capital, which pays substantially higher than its counterparts. Known for its secretive nature, the London-based firm is reputed for its inclusive hiring practices and ties to the UK’s Labour party.

Profit-Sharing Models

Some trading firms operate as limited liability partnerships (LLPs), akin to hedge funds, distributing profits among a select group of employees. For instance, Jane Street paid an average of £808k ($1.1m) to its UK staff, while LLP members received an average of £14m ($18.6m). XTX Markets allocated approximately £19.9m ($26.5m) per partner in 2024.

The Crypto Trading Landscape

Despite fluctuations in the market, working in electronic crypto trading remains a lucrative option. Wintermute, a prominent crypto native trading firm, outpaced traditional players like Hudson River Trading and Jump Trading in terms of compensation. Jane Street’s foray into crypto markets has also been a contentious topic.

Evolution of Pay Scales

The reported figures are based on data from 2024, with subsequent years witnessing significant shifts. For instance, Jane Street’s average employee pay was projected to exceed $2m in 2025, up from $1.4m in the previous year. Similarly, Citadel Securities offered marginally higher compensation than Jane Street in 2024.
