Wise Expands its Austin Office Space and Partners with Upwork
Wise, the well-known payments fintech company, is preparing for its new stock listing in New York. As part of this preparation, the company has expanded its North American hub in Austin, Texas, and has also broadened the reach of its payment infrastructure product, Wise Platform, through a new partnership with the freelancer platform, Upwork.
Wise Austin Office Expansion
Earlier this month, Wise tripled its office space in Austin to a whopping 90,000 square feet. This is a significant increase compared to the previous size of their Austin office. The expansion comes as part of Wise’s efforts to increase its presence in North America and strengthen its operations.
Interestingly, Wise refers to its employees as “Wisers,” and currently has over 700 of them working in its U.S. offices. The majority of these Wisers are based in the Austin office. Emily Foulkes, Wise’s people lead for North America, confirmed the company’s intentions to continue hiring across a broad range of roles, including servicing, engineering, tech, and people.
Full-Stack Office Concept
One of the intriguing aspects of Wise’s working culture is its embrace of the full-stack office concept. This concept involves different disciplines or role functions sharing the same office space. According to Foulkes, this approach enhances creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving as engineers, product developers, customer service representatives, and operational teams work side by side, enabling efficient feedback loops.
Wise first opened its Austin office in January 2022 and subsequently moved to its current location in the Domain, a mixed-use center located in the northern part of the city, in 2023. This move coincided with a wider tech boom in Austin.
Wise and the Texas Tech Scene
The tech growth in Texas, however, seemed to slow down by 2024, according to venture capital firm SignalFire. Despite this, Wise has remained committed to its investment in Austin, seeing it as a strategic location to bring its products to people and businesses across North America.
Partnership with Upwork
In addition to expanding its physical footprint, Wise has also broadened the reach of its Wise Platform through a new partnership with Upwork. Under the new deal, Wise Platform will become an infrastructure partner for Upwork’s international payouts. This move is seen as a strategic initiative to enhance Upwork’s existing international payment infrastructure for their global freelancers.
Wise Platform is a global payment infrastructure that serves banks, financial institutions, and enterprises with the technology and network needed to enable payments within their own networks. Some of the major users of Wise Platform include Standard Chartered, Morgan Stanley, Brex, Google Pay, and Ramp.
Upcoming Dual U.S.-U.K. Stock Listing
As Wise is preparing for a dual U.S.-U.K. stock listing, it continues to focus on its international growth and a pipeline of future prospects. Despite missing its earnings targets in its latest quarterly report, the company remains optimistic about its future growth potential.
With its recent office expansion and strategic partnerships, Wise is positioning itself to be a dominant player in the fintech space. The company’s commitment to innovation, collaboration, and customer satisfaction is a testament to its strategic vision and growth mindset.
