Position: Councillor’s Assistant (Policy & Planning)
Type: Full-time, 35 hours per week
Salary: $65,000 – $72,000 annually, based on experience. Includes a strong benefits package.
Location: Ottawa
Role Overview:
The Councillor’s Assistant (Policy & Planning) will provide policy analysis, manage community and political relations, and oversee a variety of planning and development projects. A key responsibility will be monitoring all planning applications in the ward, briefing the Councillor, and liaising with City staff, community groups, and private sector stakeholders. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare Council and Committee agendas for the Councillor’s meetings and responsibilities.
- Monitor policy initiatives, development files, and emerging issues; provide regular updates to the Councillor.
- Review correspondence and direct it to appropriate City staff for input; follow up to ensure timely responses.
- Work with City staff to track policy development and expedite necessary documentation.
- Build strong relationships with City partners, stakeholders, and community groups to foster collaboration.
- Identify local needs and trends, working with stakeholders to develop creative solutions.
- Ensure the Councillor’s office complies with all required protocols and procedures.
- Assist with correspondence, drafting motions, inquiries, and legislative documents as needed.
Education & Experience Requirements:
- Post-secondary diploma required; a degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Urban Planning, Environmental Studies, or a related field is preferred.
- Relevant work experience may substitute for formal academic requirements.
- Minimum of 2 years in administrative services required; prior experience supporting an elected official is an asset.
Languages:
- Proficiency in English (oral, reading, and writing) required.
- Bilingualism (English/French) is an advantage.
Knowledge & Skills:
- Strong understanding of municipal governance, Council operations, and committee structures.
- Familiarity with local demographics, ward initiatives, and relevant policy matters.
- Knowledge of municipal/provincial land use policies and the Ontario Planning Act.
- Experience with affordable and non-profit housing issues is an asset.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and standard office protocols.
- Strong interpersonal, analytical, and communication skills (written and verbal).
- Ability to manage complex policy positions, work independently, and maintain attention to detail.
