Why Vast Bank is advancing on tokenized deposits

Vast Bank Prepares for Tokenized Deposit Launch

Vast Bank, a progressive player in digital banking innovation, is set to launch a retail tokenized deposit offering this year. This is in line with the growing interest among banks in digital assets, while still maintaining the trust and stability inherent in traditional deposit systems. The move is a significant stride towards integrating the advantages of blockchain technology with traditional banking systems. Vast Community Bank, under its parent company Vast Holdings, has been working in collaboration with Uphold, a digital asset trading platform, and USBC, a tokenized deposit issuer.

Unlocking Billions Through Deposit Tokenization

The innovative collaboration aims to create a retail tokenized deposit offering for customers to access digital representations of U.S. dollar deposits worldwide. Vast Bank’s CEO, Linda Jenkinson, points out that billions of dollars currently trapped in non-interest checking accounts could be safely unlocked through deposit tokenization. According to Jenkinson, the tokenized deposit scheme has been operational internally, with a phased rollout for individual customers planned for this year.

How Tokenized Deposits Work

Tokenized deposits are digital representations of traditional fiat currency deposits. In this case, the U.S. dollar is recorded on a distributed ledger and held at chartered banks. The process allows for the fluidity and speed of stablecoins combined with the safety and stability of traditional banking systems. These deposits are FDIC insured, mitigating the risk factor associated with many digital assets.

Tokenized Deposits vs Stablecoins

While stablecoins have been a popular choice in the digital asset trading space, Uphold CEO Simon McLoughlin believes that tokenized deposits address many of the issues found in stablecoin use. McLoughlin elaborates that unlike stablecoins, which are usually issued by fintechs, tokenized deposits are FDIC insured, pay interest, and count as cash on a corporate balance sheet. A recent Citi report also suggests that by 2030, tokenized deposits could surpass stablecoins in popularity.

Vast Bank’s Digital Assets Journey

Vast Bank has a history of embracing digital assets. In 2021, the bank enabled customers to purchase crypto from their bank accounts through a crypto trading app. However, amid regulatory scrutiny and the collapse of FTX, the bank halted the practice in 2024. Now that the bank is out of its consent order, it’s ready to incorporate tokenized deposit offerings into its services.

The Future of Tokenized Deposits

With the regulatory environment becoming increasingly favorable for banking innovation, the future of tokenized deposits looks promising. As Jenkinson points out, the current administration’s stance on banking, crypto, and fintech has been extremely supportive, paving the way for innovations like tokenized deposits.

While the road to complete integration of blockchain technology and traditional banking systems may still be long, Vast Bank’s steps towards tokenized deposits signify a significant stride in the right direction. The bank’s move could potentially unlock billions of dollars and provide consumers with a secure, convenient, and profitable way to manage their deposits.
