The Role of a Senior Business Banking Officer in Retail Banking

A senior relationship banking role, the Senior Business Banking Officer is instrumental in the Retail Banking sector, particularly within the Business Banking department. This position reports directly to the SVP, Business Banking Team Leader and carries the status of an Exempt Officer, falling under Grade 11 in the company.

The Senior Business Banking Officer earns a salary in the range of $66,699 – $141,734 annually, with actual compensation within this range being determined by factors such as skills, prior relevant experience, and specific work location. The position is based in Utica, NY.

The Purpose of the Role

The Senior Business Banking Officer is a dynamic role with a strong emphasis on establishing new Business Banking relationships and servicing existing ones. The role also involves cross-selling other bank services. They primarily serve Business Banking customers with revenues between $1MM and $25MM, and borrowing needs of $100M to $3-5MM.

Key Responsibilities

The role of a Senior Business Banking Officer encompasses a wide range of responsibilities. The officer is required to independently initiate a calling program to self-originate Business Banking relationships in accordance with bank policies and revenue objectives. They are also responsible for the retention and growth of the assigned customer loan portfolio, with a focus on proactive client contact and cross-selling.

They exhibit strong sales skills, independently identifying and actively cross-selling the full suite of bank products. They make referrals to other lines of business to generate interest and non-interest income within specified goals including, but not limited to Berkshire Insurance, Wealth Management, Cash Management, and Merchant Processing.

The officer works within their assigned geographic markets in joint calling efforts with other departments to uncover lending and cross-sell opportunities. They also engage in networking to develop Centers of Influence (COI’s) and referrals to Berkshire, building upon relationships to grow the brand of the Bank within the business community.

They also ensure all transactions adhere to sound risk management/pricing practices as well as all internal credit/regulatory requirements. They monitor their portfolio to ensure accurate risk profile and to minimize documentation exceptions. Moreover, they ensure compliance with all banking laws, rules, regulations, and prescribed policies/practices/procedures necessary to reduce risk and uphold ethical standards related to and required by one’s duties.

Education and Experience

The position requires a Bachelor’s degree in business, economics, or finance or equivalent financial experience. In terms of experience, a minimum of 5+ years as a business banking lender is required along with strong customer service experience which includes process-driven outbound calling. A proven track record of working in partnership to achieve goals is also a must.

Skills and Knowledge

A deep knowledge of credit and loan structures is essential for this role. Strong computer and analytical skills are also required along with solid customer service, communication, and presentation skills.
