Role and Responsibilities of a Senior Software Engineer (Bank Tech)
As a Senior Software Engineer at Capital One, you’ll be joining a team of Back End Software Engineers who are passionate about combining data with emerging technologies. This role is more than just about writing code. It’s about being at the forefront of a major transformation within Capital One.
The responsibilities of a Senior Software Engineer include, but are not limited to:
- Working in collaboration with Agile teams to design, develop, test, implement, and support technical solutions using full-stack development tools and technologies.
- Staying abreast of tech trends, experimenting with and learning new technologies, participating in internal & external technology communities, and mentoring other members of the engineering community.
- Working with digital product managers to deliver robust cloud-based solutions that help millions of Americans achieve financial empowerment.
- Utilizing programming languages like Java, Python, SQL, Node, Go, and Scala, as well as Open Source RDBMS and NoSQL databases, Container Orchestration services including Docker and Kubernetes, and a variety of AWS tools and services.
- Tinkering with technology – Myo, Amazon Echo, Arduino and IoT, AR/VR, Creative Coding; participating in hackathons and innovation sprints.
While not a requirement, a basic understanding of working with hardware systems, kiosks, or electrical engineering is considered a plus.
Qualifications Needed for the Role
The basic qualifications for this role include:
- A Bachelor’s Degree
- At least 3 years of professional software engineering experience (Internship experience does not apply)
While not mandatory, the following qualifications are preferred:
- 5+ years of experience in at least one of the following: Java, C++, or JavaScript
- 1+ years of experience with AWS, GCP, Microsoft Azure, or another cloud service
- 2+ years of experience with Microsoft Windows, ProFlex 4, NDC/911/912
- 2+ years of experience on an ATM Software stack
- 2+ years of experience with collaborative release processes

Compensation and Benefits
The annual salary range for this role varies by location. For example, in Richmond, VA, the annual full-time salary for a Senior Software Engineer ranges from $144,200 – $164,600. The actual salary offered to a candidate will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.
