The Role of a Senior Banking Advisor
At Northern Trust, the Senior Banking Advisor plays a crucial role in developing new client relationships and deepening existing ones. This individual manages complex credit and deposit relationships for high-net-worth individuals, family offices, and non-profit organizations. The role emphasizes both strategic growth and exceptional client service, coordinating with internal partners across the Bank to deliver a comprehensive suite of financial solutions.
Key Responsibilities
The responsibilities of a Senior Banking Advisor at Northern Trust are multifaceted. They range from proactively developing new client relationships and identifying prospects, to managing sophisticated credit, deposit, and treasury management relationships. The Advisor also identifies and facilitates opportunities across investment, fiduciary, and wealth management solutions beyond traditional banking services.
One of their key roles includes structuring and negotiating complex loan and lease agreements in alignment with bank policies and risk frameworks. They are also responsible for analyzing and negotiating key loan terms, such as pricing conditions, interest rates, and interest rate swaps, ensuring compliance with Credit Policy Committee guidelines. They oversee the preparation and execution of loan documentation, ensuring the accuracy and completeness of financing agreements.
The Senior Banking Advisor also acts as a trusted advisor to clients on goals-based wealth management strategies and develops a strong network of Centers of Influence (COIs), leveraging relationships to generate new business opportunities. They also serve as a subject matter expert, providing in-depth consultation and leadership to colleagues and internal partners, and leading strategic initiatives and cross-functional projects that are broad in scope and technically complex.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
The Senior Banking Advisor must have an advanced understanding of the banking industry, competitive landscape, and credit/lending practices. They also need to be familiar with investment, trust, and financial planning concepts to support comprehensive client solutions. Strong negotiation, leadership, and relationship management skills are crucial, as are excellent oral and written communication abilities.
Adaptability and flexibility in a fast-paced, evolving environment are essential, as is the ability to interpret internal and external business challenges and recommend solutions that enhance product and service offerings. The advisor must be capable of influencing stakeholders and communicating complex concepts effectively, and demonstrate expertise in a specialized banking or financial discipline.
Experience & Education
The Senior Banking Advisor should have a minimum of 5 years of experience in financial analysis, client servicing, commercial lending, or leasing. Experience leading functional teams or managing moderate-risk projects is preferred. A Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, Economics, or a related field is required, with an advanced degree or professional certifications (e.g., CFA, CFP) preferred.
