A Principal Associate, Ontology and Data Modeling, works collaboratively across various lines of business and functions within Capital One. The primary responsibility is to develop domain ontologies to support enterprise initiatives. The role also involves partnering with other teams within Capital One to facilitate the integration of semantic technology into the company’s products and services.

Key Responsibilities of the Role
The Principal Associate, Ontology and Data Modeling, has several core responsibilities. These include:
- Developing, implementing, and governing ontologies and optimized data models in consultation with stakeholders in teams dedicated to improving data discoverability, search, and product development.
- Contributing to data integration and mapping efforts to harmonize data with Capital One’s upper and domain ontologies.
- Communicating and advocating the value of Capital One’s efforts in ontologies, semantics, and standardization across the business.
- Partnering with Technology, Machine Learning, and other Capital One teams to support the development and integration of semantics in Capital One products and services.
- Analyzing and implementing knowledge organization strategies using tools capable of machine learning, ontology management, and semantic enrichment.
- Maintaining awareness of competitor and industry developments related to ontology use, knowledge organization, data modeling, and machine learning.
- Understanding and adhering to W3C standards related to ontologies, in particular RDF, RDFS, OWL, SKOS, and SHACL.
- Developing standards, guidelines, and direction for ontology, data modeling, semantics and Data Standardization in general at Capital One.
- Testing/troubleshooting new or updated models and systems.
- Managing and overseeing other projects as assigned by Product Owners and Supervisors.

Qualifications for the Role
Basic qualifications for this position include a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and at least 3 years’ experience in a metadata field of work or a master’s degree in a related field. Familiarity with W3C standards and ontology and linked data tools is also required. Preferred qualifications include a Master’s degree in a related field, an understanding of the development of ontologies, familiarity with graph databases and technologies, and strong project management experience.
Capital One offers this position as a hybrid role, with associates spending about half their time in-person at one of their offices. The annual salaries for this role vary by location, and the role is also eligible to earn performance-based incentive compensation.
