Changes in Court Case Involving Chirayu Rana and Lorna Hajdini
Changes are occurring in the court case involving Chirayu Rana, the former JPMorgan VP who claims he was sexually assaulted by colleague Lorna Hajdini, who in turn absolutely denies this and is countersuing Rana.
Firstly, and as reported by the New York Post, Rana’s lawyer Daniel Kaiser, will no longer be representing him. Kaiser filed a document today requesting that he be discharged as Rana’s attorney. Henceforth, the document says that John Doe (Rana) will represent himself until “such time as he may secure new counsel.”
Secondly, Hajdini also has a change of lawyer. Her new lawyer, announced in a separate filing, is Samuel S. Shaulson of Morgan Lewis & Bockius LLP.
Legal Representation
Shaulson has form. A specialist in financial services cases, he represented Morgan Stanley in a 2018 case in which a male employee accused both the bank and seven named employees, four of whom were female, of discriminating against him.
In that case, Mahmoud Latif, a gay Muslim associate at Morgan Stanley, argued that the bank both discriminated and harassed him because of his sexual orientation, religion and other protected traits. Morgan Stanley settled Latif’s case for an unknown amount in 2021.
While Hajdini seems to be lawyering up, for the moment at least, Rana seems to be lawyering down. JPMorgan, which says it investigated his claims and found nothing, has also reserved the right to pursue its own claim against him.
Conclusion
Rana really needs a new lawyer. Kaiser had been promising to bring his case forcefully to court and told the Wall Street Journal earlier this month: “We look forward to the truth and facts coming to light through court proceedings. Whether my client’s civil rights were violated will be determined in a court of law.” Kaiser previously represented women with legal cases against Jeffrey Epstein.
