In today’s fast-paced digital world, the banking sector is not left behind. The industry is witnessing an evolution, with banks increasingly embracing digital platforms to provide their services. A significant part of this transformation involves understanding the needs and expectations of Gen Z clients, the digital natives. This is where the Electronic Banking Intern steps in.

Position Overview

The Electronic Banking Intern’s role extends beyond traditional banking operations. Their primary responsibility is to support the bank’s digital strategy by conducting critical research on Gen Z client behaviors, preferences, and expectations. This role is not exclusive to current clients but also extends to potential clients who are yet to tap into the bank’s digital services. The intern will analyze how these clients interact with the bank’s digital tools, identify gaps in usability and communication, and propose actionable recommendations that will enhance future design and engagement.

Exposure to Core Disciplines within Electronic Banking

In addition to their primary project work, the intern will gain invaluable exposure to the core disciplines within Electronic Banking. These include Support Operations, Harvester Optimization, Reporting and Analytics, and Enterprise Projects. This internship offers a 360-degree view of how digital banking functions, serving both clients and internal partners, and provides a unique opportunity for holistic learning and growth.

Essential Responsibilities

The intern will conduct qualitative and quantitative research on digital banking experiences among Gen Z users through various means like peer surveys, focus groups, and app reviews. They will also benchmark other community banks and fintechs to identify best practices for mobile and online banking engagement. The intern is tasked with summarizing the findings and presenting actionable recommendations to the Electronic Banking leadership and Marketing teams. Regular attendance and completion of all compliance training related to the position are expected.

Internship Basics

The internship runs for 10 to 12 weeks during the summer, with a flexible start and end dates. The intern is anticipated to work 40 hours per week, from Monday through Friday. This opportunity is based on-site in South Bend, IN, and is a paid position. The program includes several activities such as an Orientation Kick-off and networking opportunities with other interns, colleagues, and senior management.

Intern Program Activities

The intern will participate in various program activities. These include an Orientation Kickoff, networking opportunities with other interns, colleagues, and senior management, and exposure to Digital Banking operations, reporting, and client experience initiatives. They will also undertake a hands-on Gen Z research project and present their recommendations to the Electronic Banking leadership team at the end of the internship.

Required Skills and Experience

The ideal candidate must have a High School Diploma/GED and be pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Data Analytics, Management Information Systems, or a related field. An interest in banking, digital user experience, financial technology, or customer behavior research is crucial. Experience or coursework in survey design, data visualization, or UX research is preferred.

The intern must also possess strong communication and storytelling skills, with an aptitude for translating data into actionable insights. Proficiency in MS Office software (Excel, Word) is essential, along with good organizational skills and analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail. Ability to prioritize workload, manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills are also required.

Physical Demands

The intern must be able to fulfill the physical demands of the position, which include sitting, standing, walking, using hands and fingers to operate keyboard and other office equipment, reaching with hands and arms, and talking or hearing. Occasional stooping or kneeling may be required, and the intern may occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
