Square: A Decade of Advancement in Commerce

Established in 2009, Square has significantly contributed to the evolution of the commerce world. Initially, Square provided a simple yet innovative solution allowing anyone to accept payments and never miss a sale. However, over time, the company recognized that sellers were hampered by antiquated products and tools that lacked synergy.

Expanding into Integrated, Omnichannel Solutions

To address these challenges, Square broadened its horizons into software, developing integrated, omnichannel solutions. These tools enabled sellers not only to sell online but also manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff.

Alongside these features, Square embedded financial services tools at the point of sale. This integration provided merchants with the convenience of accessing business loans and managing their cash flow all in one place. The acquisition of Afterpay has further enhanced Square’s mission to provide omnichannel tools that deliver substantial value and growth. Afterpay’s integration empowers sellers to attract next-generation shoppers, increase order sizes, and compete on a larger scale.

Partnering with Sellers of All Sizes

Today, Square is a trusted partner to sellers of all sizes, from large enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations to new sellers just starting their journey. Moreover, many merchants who began selling with Square have grown larger over time. As these sellers grow, Square’s solutions also evolve, creating a vast opportunity in front of them. Square is committed to building a significant, meaningful, and enduring business, and it is helping sellers worldwide to achieve the same.

The Role: Head of Design at Square Banking

With the launch of Square Banking, the company aims to provide small businesses with the financial tools they need to flourish. By integrating payments, bank tools, and cash flow into one seamless experience powered by AI, Square empowers sellers to confidently manage their money, easily access capital, and grow their business at their own pace.

Square is currently seeking a Head of Design to spearhead the next phase of Square Banking’s growth. This role is critical as the design leader will shape how millions of businesses interact with their money daily. The Head of Design will set the vision for how design, brand, and creative work together to make Square Banking a trusted, differentiated, and deeply human experience – across every product, platform, and touchpoint.

Responsibilities and Requirements

The Head of Design will have a broad range of responsibilities, including setting the vision, leading with trust and craft, driving company-defining initiatives, scaling impact through systems, championing customer-centric thinking, and shaping the future of intelligent design.

Applicants should have 15+ years of experience in design management, a record of delivering transformative, high-impact work, experience in leading design at scale, a portfolio demonstrating vision, taste, and range, strength in developing and scaling organizations, and an evolving perspective on design’s role in AI, automation, and emerging technologies.

Square is committed to building a more inclusive economy and workplace, and it evaluates all employees and job applicants without regard to identity or any legally protected class. The company also provides reasonable accommodations to disabled applicants throughout the recruitment process.
