The Role of the Business Banking Underwriting Manager

The Business Banking Underwriting Manager at WSFS Bank plays a crucial role in managing and underwriting business purpose loans of $3 million or less. The focus is on adhering to the Bank’s standard of risk/credit quality and procedures. The responsibilities of this role include reviewing, analyzing, underwriting, and approving loan applications for Small Business, Business Banking, and periodic SBA loan originations. Furthermore, the Underwriting Manager leads a team of underwriters responsible for reviewing and deciding on similarly sized conventional Small Business and Business Banking credits.

Job Responsibilities

  • Managing end-to-end underwriting processes for Business Banking Loan originations, ensuring adherence to Bank Policy.
  • Reviewing and underwriting complex loan structures, checking eligibility, financial information, and more for credit worthiness and institutional alignment.
  • Providing daily leadership and management for a team of 4-10 Associates.
  • Offering training and development opportunities to Business Banking Staff.
  • Identifying efficiency enhancements and opportunities for cross-training and collaboration.
  • Partnering with leadership on broad bank initiatives, committee presentations, and periodic portfolio assessments/audits.
  • Operationalizing new procedures, products, portfolio analysis, and identifying process enhancements.
  • Managing credit pipeline and decisioning to Department SLAs.

Additional Duties

  • Coaching and leading a team of underwriters, demonstrating understanding of complex Conventional loan structures.
  • Collaborating with Underwriters, Relationship Managers, and Closers for loans in origination, post-approval and to closing queue.
  • Reviewing loans for Small Business, Business Banking, and potential SBA loans.
  • Ensuring Bank Compliance for Small Business and Business Banking.
  • Assisting with Audits and Compliance requests.
  • Supporting leadership in business and strategic initiatives.
  • Working with Leadership to develop strategies and recommendations for improving efficiency, productivity, and quality of work within the Business Banking Team.

Minimum Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree, or equivalent credit training/certifications and/or work experience.
  • A minimum of 10 years of credit review experience, preferably underwriting Conventional Business Banking loans.
  • Strong background in reviewing personal and business financial statements, with proven ability to render sound credit decisions on own authority.
  • Proficiency in Excel.
  • Knowledge of loan origination systems (nCino and/or related), reporting, dashboards, etc.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Strong PC spreadsheet skills and excellent analytical skills.
  • Independent thinking in collaboration with other professionals to address proper loan structure(s) and effectively measure credit/risk and client profile evaluation/outcome.
  • Thorough knowledge of credit and regulatory policy(s).

Salary Range

The salary range for this position is $108,722.00 – $178,616.75. Individual base pay may vary based on factors such as experience, job-related skills, education, geographic location, and specific business and organizational needs.
