Bank of America’s fixed income traders can look with schadenfreude at Goldman Sachs

Q1 2026 Reporting Season for Investment Banks

The first quarter of 2026 reporting season for the world’s investment banks is well underway, with major players like Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Citi, Bank of America, and Morgan Stanley releasing their financial results.

Bank of America’s Performance

Bank of America’s performance in Q1 2026 was not as strong as expected. The bank reported the second lowest increase in M&A (47%) and Equity Capital Markets (31%) among the top five American banks compared to the same period in 2025. While BofA’s Debt Capital Markets business saw a modest increase of 2.7%, it lagged behind its competitors.

However, the equities team at BofA stood out with a 30% increase in Q1 2026 compared to the previous year, outperforming all other banks except Citi. On the other hand, the fixed income, commodities, and currencies (FICC) traders at BofA disappointed with only a 2% increase, while rivals like Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan saw growth of over 20%.

Despite previous successes and heavy investments in its teams, especially in Europe, Bank of America’s results were underwhelming. The lackluster performance of its commodities team was highlighted as a possible factor contributing to the overall performance.

Goldman Sachs’ Results

Goldman Sachs also faced challenges in Q1 2026, particularly in its rates and mortgage teams. The firm’s CFO, Denis Coleman, attributed this to market conditions, while pointing out that commodities and currencies performed better. CEO David Solomon emphasized that it was still the firm’s 10th best quarter historically, with FICC performing well overall.

Overall, the comparison of Q1 results for select investment banks in 2025 versus 2026 shows varying performances across different business segments.
