The Pivotal Role of a Bank Manager in Retail Banking Centers

Bank Managers play a crucial role in the successful operation of Retail Banking Centers. They are responsible for the overall leadership, management, and success of these centers, providing a transformative and effective leadership approach across all areas. To achieve this, they ensure the readiness of all Relationship Bankers, lead growth initiatives, contribute to a successful customer-centric experience, and proactively manage operational risk activities. The ultimate aim of these tasks is to strive for excellence in execution in each of these areas.

The work schedule of a Bank Manager can often involve occasional evenings or Saturdays, and temporarily working at other assigned banking center locations based on staffing needs.

Key Responsibilities of a Bank Manager

Leadership Activities

Bank Managers are expected to lead, coach, evaluate, execute, and have an impact on the proactive leadership activities for the attraction, expansion, and retention of customers. They develop banking center plans to determine, coordinate and execute growth activities by aligning weekly goals with sales and operations activities. Bank Managers deliver daily coaching and evaluations for effective execution. They also provide effective new consumer onboarding and engagement by routinely strengthening new and current customer relationships, introducing new and existing customers to the bank’s products and services, and addressing customer questions. Their role is pivotal in the acquisition of consumer business through the effective use of leadership activities. Bank Managers also participate in community involvement activities to increase bank outreach and foster new business client relationships at the banking center. They are constantly on the lookout to identify opportunities to introduce customers to partners at appropriate moments, and encourage referrals from client relationships and Centers of Influence (COI’s).

Talent Leadership

Bank Managers also shoulder the responsibility of talent leadership. They develop and manage a high-performing team, directly managing the day-to-day Human Resources processes for employees, including selection, training, performance management, disciplinary actions, individual career development, recognition, and retention.

Operational Risk

Bank Managers are accountable for the compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations; and bank policies and procedures. They recommend corrections when necessary and ensure completion of necessary compliance-related training for the colleagues at their banking center(s). They lead, coach, evaluate, and impact the overall management evaluation of operational and risk activities, and results within the Banking Center. Bank Managers approve transactions within authorities and manage the execution of opening/closing procedures.

Customer Experience

Bank Managers lead, manage and coach their team to assess customer and prospect needs and offer appropriate solutions. They ensure all colleagues demonstrate the knowledge and skills to execute on customer needs. Proactively seeking to learn about new products, services, technologies, and customer service tactics; teaching others. They educate and fulfill customer requests, both routine and complex, resolve complex customer complaints, and impact the customer experience by leading, managing, and coaching colleagues using the defined customer experience guidelines.

Partnership Activities

Bank Managers lead, coach, evaluate, and impact the overall management of colleague efforts involving Banking Center Collaboration, i.e., referrals and closed business and the activities that support partnerships. They partner with defined Small Business Bankers to grow business revenue and enhance the business customer experience. They also proactively identify opportunities to introduce customers to partners.
