The Role of an Account Manager in Banking

At Northern Trust, the role of an Account Manager is pivotal to the functioning of the banking and lending team. They are the bridge between the lenders and the underwriting team, providing credit support for a variety of tasks. This includes due diligence for new loan requests, monitoring financial covenants, tracking financial reporting, reviewing loan documents, and communicating with clients, amongst other business development activities. Specific Responsibilities of an Account Manager

As the initial contact for complex client or partner inquiries, an Account Manager assists in creating and implementing complex banking solutions for new and existing Wealth Management clients. They also assist bankers with internal administration of accounts, business development, and client presentations. Their role extends to due diligence at the onset of a credit opportunity, including gathering financial statements and other credit information required to assess a loan.

They also coordinate with the service team to execute daily client transaction activity and transaction processing. This includes managing fees, payments, and borrowings; handling inquiry resolution; obtaining the necessary documentation for credit underwriting and maintenance; and ensuring systems information is up-to-date.

Account Managers also work closely with the service team on deposit-related transaction processing, oversee the development of appropriate action plans for client servicing, and serve as a resource for the relationship servicing team for highly complex Wealth Management relationships.

Qualifications for an Account Manager

The ideal candidate for the Account Manager role at Northern Trust should have at least three years’ experience, or equivalent, in financial servicing or accounting fields with a strong client servicing background. They should be knowledgeable about banking products and services, and have a clear understanding of internal banking functions. Analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills are also essential for this role.
