The Role of VP – Risk & Banking Operations at Mercury
Moving to the specifics of our team structure, the VP – Risk & Banking Operations is responsible for strategic leadership across several key areas. These include Onboarding, KYC/KYB, EDD/ODD, Fraud & Disputes, Treasury Operations, Payments Operations, and Lifecycle Operations. Leading a growing organization of over 120 people, the VP collaborates with executives across the company to create a resilient and scalable operational function. This role is pivotal in helping us navigate risk meticulously and effectively.
Key Responsibilities
As the VP – Risk & Banking Operations, you are expected to:
- Establish a Risk & Banking Operations organization that sets industry standards and differentiates Mercury on its own merits.
- Develop, lead, and structure talented operations teams, fostering a culture of collaboration and strong risk thinking across the company.
- Balance short- and long-term company goals to enable new customers, markets, or product features.
- Work closely with Legal and Compliance teams to uphold Mercury’s risk and compliance standards, proactively building the operational systems to scale its impact.
- Partner with Product, Engineering, Design, and Data teams to enhance user experience and operational automation.
- Drive strategic decision-making with data and metrics, working closely with the Finance team on organizational growth, headcount & capacity planning, and costs.
- Take ownership of how Mercury handles, minimizes, and responds to fraud and financial loss.
- Expand Mercury’s BPO efforts, managing current partners and developing strategies to identify, onboard, train, and supervise new partners.
- Build efficient operational systems across various risk-related product features.
- Find and work with the best tools and partners to enable a great Risk & Banking operations organization, forming strong relationships with partner financial institutions.
Experience and Skills Required
The ideal candidate for this role should have:
- 10+ years of experience in an operational risk and/or banking management function in a financial technology company, large banking institution, or the payments industry. 15+ years of overall experience.
- 7+ years of experience in a leadership role, managing senior-level leaders who themselves manage operational functions across various risk domains.
- Strong analytical thinking skills and ability to develop team and organizational metrics.
- Experience building resilient and scalable operations using robust procedures and process automation.
- Expert understanding of industry risk trends and deep respect for compliance and financial regulations.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to make decisions quickly and pivot in a fast-paced and rapidly changing business and regulatory environment.
