Understanding the Role of a Relationship Banking Associate
The position of a Relationship Banking Associate is a crucial one in the banking industry. The primary responsibility of this role is to deliver high-quality customer service and responsiveness. The objective is to ensure the fulfillment and satisfaction of both internal and external customers. This role plays a significant part in the efficient and timely processing of routine transactions and other related services, all of which must be accomplished accurately, following the set policy and procedures.
Another essential aspect of this position is identifying and referring sales opportunities to the appropriate business partner or line of business that will help fulfill the customer’s need(s). These interactions may be in person or over the telephone. The Relationship Banking Associate is also required to provide support for basic consumer deposit account opening as required.
Education and Experience
The qualification and experience requirements for this role are quite straightforward. A minimum requirement is a High School Diploma or its equivalent. Candidates should also have a minimum of one year’s experience in related banking positions or equivalent sales/customer service experience.
Skills and Abilities
Among the key skills required for this position are excellent listening & communication skills, the ability to approach, identify, and have conversations with customers, identify needs and opportunities, and good organizational and interpersonal skills. The individual should also have strong customer relations skills, which also includes problem-solving and decision-making abilities. The ability to function in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment is crucial, as is the ability to work well with people as a team. Proficiency in computer skills is also a must.
Tasks Performed
The tasks performed by a Relationship Banking Associate are quite varied. A significant portion of the role (65%) involves processing routine transactions and associated general customer and account servicing duties with a high level of accuracy and efficiency. This could include routine and non-routine teller transactions in accordance with policy and procedures. The associate is also responsible for various administrative duties, such as maintaining records, preparing a variety of forms & reports, daily vault balancing, and engaging in referral and relationship management in accordance with established objectives and goals. They also provide support for new deposit account opening as required.
Around 25% of the role is dedicated to identifying customer opportunities through interactive and consultative conversations to assess and address the needs of the customer. The associate also provides services to customers, including but not limited to basic deposit account opening, and refers customers to the appropriate business partners when necessary. The associate conducts sales and service calls to existing and potential customers to ensure existing customer needs are met and to prospect new sales leads. The associate takes ownership to resolve customer issues and complaints while delivering a high level of responsiveness.
Participation in community events that support efforts with the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) accounts for 5% of the role, with the remaining 5% being made up of other duties as assigned and required.
Physical Requirements
While the role is primarily office-based, there are some physical requirements as well. These include effective communication with internal and/or external customers, spending 50% of the time stationary, moving about within or between locations, as well as bending, twisting, crouching, and squatting. The individual may also be required to move objects up to a maximum of 20 lbs.
