Moniepoint Acquires Sumac Microfinance Bank
In a significant move that marks its formal entry into the East African region, Moniepoint has successfully completed the acquisition of Sumac Microfinance Bank in Kenya. This acquisition, which has been approved by the Central Bank of Kenya and the Competition Authority of Kenya, signifies the company’s first major purchase in Africa. The Nigerian fintech company now holds a 78% stake in Sumac Microfinance Bank.
Transforming Financial Services for MSMEs in Kenya
Moniepoint’s acquisition of Sumac Microfinance Bank is not merely a business expansion. It’s a strategic move aimed at introducing its array of banking, payment, credit, and enterprise support services to micro, small, and medium-sized businesses in Kenya. The fintech giant plans to transition Sumac Microfinance Bank’s customers onto a digital-led platform. This transition aims to provide customers with broader capital access, increased lending capacity, and a new technology infrastructure.
John Kibatha Njoroge, the founder and chairman of Sumac Microfinance Bank, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership with Moniepoint. He highlighted the potential for this collaboration to strengthen financial inclusion across Kenya and transform the value delivered to Kenyan businesses.
Moniepoint’s Expansion and Growth Strategy
The acquisition of Sumac Microfinance Bank aligns with Moniepoint’s recent corporate moves, including the purchase of Orda Africa, a cloud-based restaurant management provider, and Bancom Europe, a financial institution licensed for electronic money services by the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority.
Founded in 2015, Moniepoint has been operating across multiple African economies, providing financial products to enterprises in both regulated and informal sectors. The acquisition of Sumac is the next step in the company’s growth strategy, as explained by Moniepoint’s co-founder and group CEO, Tosin Eniolorunda.
Eniolorunda expressed delight in welcoming Sumac to the Moniepoint family. He emphasized Kenya’s vibrant MSME sector and sophisticated mobile money ecosystem as the perfect fit for Moniepoint’s next growth phase. He also expressed optimism about the strategic partnership with Sumac, seeing it as a gateway to providing Kenyan entrepreneurs with integrated tools that drive scale and build a more impactful organization.
As Moniepoint continues its expansion, it’s clear that the company is not just focused on growth but also on creating transformative value for businesses in the regions it operates.
