The Latest Updates on HSBC’s Capital Markets Business
If you are considering a career in debt or equity capital markets and have HSBC on your radar, you might be in luck. Recent developments suggest that HSBC is currently experiencing several openings, many of which are at senior levels.
According to eFinancialCareers, there have been a number of departures from HSBC’s capital markets division in recent times. One notable exit is that of Rob Baker, a director in EMEA ECM syndicate, who has reportedly moved to Citi to work alongside Ed Sankey, his former boss.
Other key departures include Karim Tannir, HSBC’s head of Middle East banking, who has left for an undisclosed external opportunity, and Khaled Darwish, HSBC’s head of DCM for Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, who is joining Bank of America in Dubai. Additionally, Nour Safa, Dawlish’s number two and the head of DCM for the Middle East and North Africa, is set to join Goldman Sachs.
While HSBC has not commented on these departures, it is evident that the bank is in need of new talent, especially in the Middle East region where several key positions have been vacated in recent months.
Focus on Debt Capital Markets
The recent exits come on the heels of HSBC’s decision in January 2025 to shift its focus towards debt capital markets and close its ECM and M&A operations outside of the Middle East and Asia. This strategic move has led to some challenges in winning global deals, according to industry insiders.
If you are interested in joining HSBC’s DCM business, key individuals to connect with include Adam Bothamley and Asif Sherani, both of whom have backgrounds in DCM syndicate. In the Middle East, Mohammed Fannouch and Samer Deghaili, who co-head the capital markets and advisory division, are worth considering for their expertise in advisory and ECM respectively.
HSBC’s DCM bankers play a significant role in the Middle East market, with the bank ranking second in the region last year, according to Dealogic. Despite recent departures, there are opportunities for those looking to contribute to the bank’s continued success in the region.
