The Role of an Attorney in Fair and Responsible Banking Legal Team

As an attorney in the Fair and Responsible Banking Legal team, the individual will provide strategic legal counsel on the Servicemembers’ Civil Relief Act (SCRA), Military Lending Act (MLA), and Community Reinvestment Act (CRA). The role may potentially expand to include additional consumer protection laws. The attorney helps business leaders identify and manage legal and regulatory risk, execute initiatives responsibly, and maintain strong relationships with regulators and internal stakeholders. In addition, the attorney will contribute to policy development, compliance controls, training, and industry engagement to support sustainable, compliant growth.

Job Responsibilities

The vast array of responsibilities includes advising business leaders and cross-functional partners on SCRA, MLA, and CRA legal requirements and risk implications. The attorney will support regular examinations and interactions with banking regulators, including preparation, issue management, and response coordination.

Other tasks include evaluating proposed business initiatives and transactions to identify legal risks, requirements, and implementation considerations. The attorney will also research and analyze federal and state statutes, regulations, guidance, and enforcement actions relevant to CRA, SCRA, and MLA.

In terms of monitoring regulatory developments and emerging trends, the attorney will communicate timely updates and recommended actions to stakeholders. The attorney will partner with Government Relations and Regulatory Affairs to assess public policy proposals and support advocacy strategies. They will also review and interpret policies and procedures impacted by CRA, SCRA, or MLA considerations and guide implementation with stakeholders.

Required Qualifications, Capabilities, and Skills

The qualifications, capabilities, and skills required for the role include a Juris Doctor (JD) or educational equivalent and active bar membership in good standing, meeting licensing requirements for the role location prior to the start date. The candidate must have a minimum of 5 years of legal or equivalent experience, with meaningful exposure to financial regulatory matters.

Other requirements include a demonstrated ability to provide practical, business-oriented legal advice in a regulated environment, proven experience managing multiple high-priority issues simultaneously with strong judgment and attention to detail, and strong legal research and analytical skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential, along with demonstrated ability to work effectively in cross-functional, interdisciplinary teams.

Preferred Qualifications, Capabilities, and Skills

While not mandatory, preferred qualifications, capabilities, and skills include direct experience advising on CRA, SCRA, and/or MLA. Familiarity with consumer banking products and services and their regulatory/compliance frameworks is also beneficial. Experience supporting regulatory examinations and interacting with prudential regulators on consumer-related topics is beneficial.

Experience drafting or coordinating comment letters and participating in trade association or industry working groups is also a plus. The ideal candidate will have a background partnering with Government Relations/Regulatory Affairs on policy strategy and stakeholder engagement, as well as experience building or enhancing policies, procedures, training, and controls tied to consumer compliance requirements.
