Why I built a referral network to bridge the AAPI-advisor trust gap

Closing the Trust Gap: Fiduciary Asian Advisor Network

I officially launched the Fiduciary Asian Advisor Network (FAANetwork) during Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month to help members of my community find and hire their trusted CFP professional.

Understanding the Need

Asian Americans, like many others, share common financial worries such as job security, providing for family members, tax minimization, debt management, and healthcare complexities. Despite these concerns, Asian Americans have historically underutilized professional wealth management services, leading to detrimental outcomes.

Cultural Barriers and Advisor Frustration

There exists a cultural perception among Asian Americans that handling money is a personal matter, making it challenging to seek financial guidance. Additionally, skepticism towards financial institutions and a lack of awareness about qualified advisors contribute to the underutilization of financial services.

On the supply side, advisors face challenges in serving the Asian American population due to past negative experiences and a traditional sales model that may not align with the needs of this demographic. This mismatch often results in suboptimal financial outcomes for Asian American clients.

The Importance of Serving Asian Americans

Children of immigrants often feel responsible for their parents’ retirement, who may have inadequate retirement savings due to cultural perceptions about investing. Immigrant families may also fall prey to predatory financial sales channels, leading to unsuitable financial products.

Despite facing challenges and feeling taken advantage of, serving the Asian American population remains a crucial mission. Building trust and providing clarity on financial matters can have a significant impact on the financial well-being of Asian American families.

Pairing Mission with Profitability

By leveraging online platforms and personal branding efforts, the founder of FAANetwork gained traction in reaching the Asian American community. The launch of FAANetwork aims to match Asian American consumers with qualified advisors while raising awareness about the importance of financial services within the community.

The revenue generated from advisor sign-ups on FAANetwork.com enables the creation of educational content to further educate the Asian American community about financial planning.
