The Role of an Associate in US Venture Credit Solutions
As an associate in US Venture Credit Solutions, you’ll be part of our Innovation Banking team, providing strategic advice and funding to North American innovation clients at every stage of their business cycle – from startup to IPO and beyond. We are dedicated to providing customized credit solutions to high-growth businesses across the US and Europe.
Your role will involve all aspects of underwriting, managing and reporting on client accounts for venture-backed technology companies. This includes regular monitoring of a portfolio of Innovation Banking loan accounts to ensure compliance with all agreed terms, analyzing due diligence results to validate lending eligibility, and preparing credit applications and other credit correspondence. You’ll also analyze borrowers’ financial condition and account status, and assist with the negotiation of legal documentation. Maintaining ongoing relationships with an assigned portfolio of accounts will be crucial, as will working closely with the sales team to develop your client-facing skills.

How to Succeed in the Role
We are looking for individuals who can put the client first. This involves proactively assessing your clients’ needs and proposing solutions to meet those needs. It also means providing continued support to your clients through understanding their goals and objectives, and addressing borrowers’ requests in a timely manner. Ensuring that any related credit applications are completed accurately and promptly is vital.
Credit management skills are also essential. You’ll assist the relationship manager and/or senior underwriter in preparing strong financing proposals that properly reflect and compensate CIBC for assessed risk. You’ll also assist in preparing draft recommendations on credit submissions and investment proposals to present to senior management. Comprehensive due diligence on all transactions is required, along with the preparation of credit memoranda and other credit correspondence.
As a portfolio manager, you’ll manage a portfolio of loan accounts, ensuring reporting requirements are met, financial covenant tests are completed, and comprehensive credit reviews are submitted to the risk group. You’ll also approve loan advances based on appropriate review and compliance of documents submitted by borrowers.
Finally, you’ll provide management with information on accounts, proactively report on problems or issues, and complete reviews and present analysis on borrowers’ financial condition.
Who We Are Looking For
We are looking for individuals with experience in commercial lending or adjudication and strong knowledge of marketplace and loan structuring. You might have gained this experience through working in technology lending, sponsor finance, and/or commercial banking.
It’s essential that you can give meaning to financial data, enjoy investigating complex problems, and can make sense of information. You should have a good understanding of corporate finance and the ability to evaluate and understand complex capital structures.
You should have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Business, Finance, Accounting, Technology, or a related field. An advanced business degree or professional designation (MBA/CFA/CA/CGA/CMA) or equivalent work experience would be an asset.
